The New Junior Playbook: Trust Over Credentials

Why the traditional career ladder is broken, and what's replacing it.

The New Junior Playbook: Trust Over Credentials

Junior engineering roles are collapsing. Companies are hiring more seniors, fewer entry-level positions. The traditional path (junior, mid, senior) is breaking down.

The work that used to teach you the craft? AI does it now.

The Traditional Path Is Dead

Junior does the grunt work. Learns patterns by doing repetitive tasks. Slowly builds judgment through thousands of small decisions.

That grunt work wasn’t just busywork. It was training. You developed taste by doing the reps.

Now AI does the reps. So how do you develop taste?

The Trust Economy

Cold applications are dead. There’s too much AI-generated slop. You need to find ways to build trust.

Qualifications don’t matter like they used to. What matters is trust. And how do you build trust? By being useful.

The Playbook

  1. Stop Chasing Qualifications: your degree matters less than whether someone at the company can vouch for you
  2. Be In The Trenches: join Discord servers, hang out in GitHub issues, answer questions on forums
  3. Turn Questions Into Projects: curious about something? Build it
  4. Use AI to Accelerate, Not Avoid: ask it to explain, then try to solve similar problems yourself
  5. Lean Into “AI Native”: you grew up with these tools, seniors are still figuring them out
  6. Energy Is Your Edge: seniors have capability but lower energy, yours is valuable

The Uncomfortable Question

What if the new path is: Learn the basics → Build trust by being useful in communities → Get noticed → Skip the resume pile → Learn senior judgment on the job, with AI as your pair?

It’s messier. Less predictable. But maybe more meritocratic.

Thinking about this stuff too? Let's talk.
